EMILIA-3D: A New UA-led Instrument to Measure Lunar Surface Temperatures in 3D at the Sub-meter Scale

The Emission Imager for Lunar Infrared Analysis in 3 Dimensions (EMILIA 3D) is a University of Arizona–led instrument selected for an upcoming lunar surface mission. EMILIA 3D combines a thermal imager with a stereo pair of visible cameras mounted on a single axis (tilt) rotation mechanism, enabling co registered measurements of surface temperature and topography. This integrated dataset will offer unprecedented insight into near surface regolith properties and the intricate relationships among small scale topography, illumination conditions, and thermal behavior on the Moon. In this talk, I will discuss the motivating science, instrument design, mission timeline, and implications for future opportunities.
