Juvenile Detainees Discover Other Worlds Through UA Planetary Science Program

A University of Arizona Ph.D. student Kayla Smith is teaching planetary sciences to students held at the Pima County Juvenile Detention Center, offering a window into careers and subjects many of the detainees have never encountered.

Kayla, a planetary sciences graduate student, developed the curriculum herself and chose to bring it to the detention center.

“It’s a population that many people may just not really consider when thinking about things like this,” Smith said. “So it’s been really rewarding and gratifying and I’ve loved every second of it.”
