Incoming PTYS graduate student Sarah Sutton is the recipient of a University Fellows Award from the Graduate Center at the University of Arizona. The University Fellows award is a prestigious fellowship offered to the University of Arizona's top incoming graduate students. Through a collaborative selection process, nominees for the award are offered a generous recruitment package, which includes:
- $30,000 one year fellowship funding
- Graduate Tuition Scholarship covering base tuition for fall and spring semester for courses taken through main campus
- University of Arizona Student Health Insurance Coverage (comparable to Graduate or Research Assistant healthcare)
- In year 2, a $500 travel and professional development stipend for attending conferences or professional development activities
- $2,500 in the spring of the third year for collaboration in a grand challenge conference (optional)
- A year-long program of professional development, community engagement, mentoring, and training in inclusive leadership as well as interdisciplinary collaboration.
Sarah is new to the PTYS graduate program, but she has been a member of the HiRISE team since 2006. She works as a Photogrammetry and Image Processing Scientist, developing methods to correct geometric distortions of images (produced by spacecraft pointing jitter), which not only improve digital terrain models and orthoimages, but are also valuable and applicable to other scientific studies and to certifying landing sites.
