Probing Solar Flares in the Infrared: The McMath-Pierce, DKIST and Beyond
Space weather events are driven by changing particle distributions and magnetic fields, which in turn arise from coronal mass ejections and solar flares on the Sun. Powering these solar events are the changing magnetic fields in the solar atmosphere, fields which are currently not measured and only poorly understood through extrapolations from lower altitudes. Recent instrumentation and observational work being done to study solar magnetic fields and flares at infrared wavelengths will be discussed. Examples of work from the McMath-Pierce telescope on Kitt Peak and the Big Bear Solar Observatory will be presented, as well as current plans and future ideas for the new 4m Daniel K Inouye Solar Telescope now being built on Maui.
