I very much appreciate this since I don't have the capability to send this to officials. To all AIA softball umpires: There will be a meeting for AIA softball officials on Thursday June 1st at 6:00 pm at St. Mary's H.S. room 17 (middle building on campus). The Region II Board is having this meeting to hear your concerns over the last softball season. We would like your feedback, positive or negative. As we understand there are many officials who are irate over the post season assignments. Now is the time to bring your concerns to the board and WE PROMISE YOU THAT THEY WILL BE TAKEN TO THE OFFICE AND WE WILL GET AN ANSWER FOR ALL OF YOU. Please try to make this meeting as it will be beneficial to all of you and AIA softball. If you have any questions or need further information, please feel free to contact the members of the board or your area representatives. Board members, Geri Magwire, Jerry Baca, Bob Bechtold, Mary Rose Redding, Greg Anderson. Area Representatives, Sam Webster, Bob Ysenski, Walt Contreras, Tim Cooper, Mike Gump, Emily Alexander, Doug Fry, Susan Hughes, Pete Long, Rich Raymond, Mary Rose Redding and Bill Silcott. We would also like to let you know that Emily and Marty Makar are working the College Softball World Series at the present time. Sincerely, Greg Anderson Region II Softball Board ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- From umpire Fri May 26 19:21:38 2000 To: Smhscoach@aol.com Subject: AIA softball meeting Content-Length: 540 Greg, Ken forwarded your email to me regarding the meeting on 1 June. I was wondering if you think any good would come of it if one or two of us Tucson guys (Region I) on the Board came to the meeting. We're pretty steamed, at least as steamed as you guys, about the situation this year, but have no planned activity to deal with it. If some of us driving to Phoenix would prevent a repeat, I'll spread the word and get a carload together. The Tucson guys are at least as steamed as all of you in Region II. Do you think I should try to get a carload of us to come to the meeting, or would it be a waste of time? In other words, would a Tucson presence do anything to prevent a repeat of the goings-on this year, or are we spinning our wheels. Have fun at the CWS! The boys up there are having a meeting this Thursday night to discuss the shit that went on this year at the AIA State tourney. I asked them if a Tucson presence might consolidate umpires' gripes State-wide. He thinks it's a great idea. If we can get a carload of Tucson folks, I'm willing to drive up to the meeting. Please let me know if you're interested. I am attaching the details. If you cannot make the meeting, can you recommend someone else who might be interested? Thanks, Bob Marcialis ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Return-path: From: Smhscoach@aol.com Full-name: Smhscoach (Greg Anderson) Bob, I think that would be a great idea. Your input would be greatly appreciated. Have your people put in writing their concerns or any problems that they have encountered. St. Mary's is located at 2525 N. 3rd St., take freeway to 7th St. exit and go North and turn left on Sheridan (Sheridan is about 7-8 blocks North of McDowell) if you get to Virginia St. you have gone one block too far North. Hope to see you guys at the meeting and maybe we can get some things resolved. Thanks Bob, Sincerely, Greg ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- From cactusump@home.com Tue May 30 10:32:59 2000 Date: Tue, 30 May 2000 10:33:21 -0700 X-Accept-Language: en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Robert Marcialis Subject: Re: AIA softball meeting Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit [stuff deleted] But now...back to the real world. Yes! I think a carload of Tucson umpires would be a strong force. Encourage anyone to come. We must define out gripes, propose a solution and be united in what we will or will not accept. I have not been in on the organizing of all this but of course have been hearing the rumblings. I am glad others are stepping to the plate and not waiting for me to do something. I will support the umpires but want organization and unity. Self serving rabble rousing will not get it. I think we can be effective. I can easily work freshman games for three schools close to me every day of the week for more money...and will gladly do it for our cause. Put together your concerns and solutions for when you get here. Hope to see you. He will find a way to circumvent the rules, bylaws or whatever. Slemmer has not been the ally we thought he might be but maybe he is still "hiding and watching". That is why it is so important that we are unified. We could demand his removal or we walk. 50% of the Certifieds (including the 'top' ones) leaving will send the message. A handful taking a stand while the others renege will not get it and only hurt the handful 'They' have alot of 'dirt' on him as well as specific instances of ignoring the bylaws and handbook and, of course, just his method of operation. I do not have a personal axe to grind but do object to his treatment and attitude for others and will support a genuine effort. My fear is just the apathy you mention. Everyone bitches and moans but no one wants to do anything. To this, I say, 'shut up and take what you get.' It looks like I'll be coming alone, if at all. Excuses have ranged from "previous commitment" to "nothing will happen so long as Reigar is in charge." With excuses like that, nothing will ever happen! However what I have heard second hand and being attributed to Emily or the "ASA" umpires they are pretty serious about not accepting assignments. They feel the AIA needs them more than they need the AIA. While I respect some of their concerns...baseball people working softball, having to work games across town, the assigner not following the availability (sound familiar) I personally believe the tactic of not accepting assignments is a waste of time. Coaches will not stick up for umpires, and there are many people wh would love to have Emily's AIA schedule. To accomplish something you have to play in the system. The AIA is governed by different committees and boards. The most effective way would be to put together the concerns in writing, include what ever documentation, and flood the AIA members representatives with this information, then present it to the proper committee and or board who can actually take action either by making the Commissioners follow the existing guidelines, or creating new guidelines that would work. I don't think the wheel has to be invented if the existing rules were followed. Hope this give you at least one person's insight. Call me if you would like. I will be home this morning. Some of the problems again illustrate the lack of communication with the AIA. It was the first time I, or anyone else here in Tucson, has laid eyes on it. Just finished reading it. To me, it seemed way toned down from what I was expecting. Politically correct, yes, but a bit lacking in specific examples. But it's out now, and the machinery is in motion, so we'll see what happens. What is the distribution of the letter? The Committee and Slemmer only? The whole Region II AIA membership? Or anyone who has requested it? Please keep me posted on the working of our issues in a timely way. We DO care in Tucson, but to get to our people and get back to you in a timely manner so that we can support you in a definitive way, we must be informed.
