Newly discovered `kiss and capture' mechanism explains the formation of Pluto and its largest moon

Research led by LPL Postdoctoral Research Fellow Adeene Denton challenges assumptions about the origin of Pluto and Charon by considering the structural strength of cold, icy worlds.

Snow4Flow: Studying Glaciers from Arizona. Principal Investigator Jack Holt discusses Snow4Flow, a new University of Arizona-led NASA mission to study arctic glaciers using advanced radar mounted on low-flying aircraft, with the goal of improving climate modeling and predicting sea level rise.

Europa Clipper is a NASA mission to study Jupiter’s moon Europa, an ocean world that might harbor alien life. Researchers at LPL are involved with two key instruments which collectively will map above and below the moon’s iceberg-like surface to examine whether life could survive below the surface.

OSIRIS-APEX is on its way to the near-Earth asteroid named Apophis, which will come so close to impacting our planet in 2029 that it will be visible to the naked eye. Principal Investigator Dani DellaGiustina began working on the OSIRIS project as an undergraduate at the University of Arizona.

Bennu’s molecular composition suggests the ice and organic compounds in
its parent body originated in the extremely cold outermost disk of gas and
dust that gave rise to the Solar System.

NASA's Pandora mission is one step closer
to probing alien atmospheres, with mission operations based at U of A

Pandora is a small satellite poised to provide in-depth study of at least 20 known planets orbiting distant stars to determine the composition of their atmospheres – especially the presence of hazes, clouds and water.
