The Ranger program helped to pave the way for the eventual Apollo missions to the Moon.

Ranger spacecraft were designed to relay pictures and other data as they approached the Moon and finally crash-landed into its surface. Project Ranger completed three flights that greatly advanced the our understanding of the lunar surface.
