Are We There Yet? Landing Site Selection on Mars
NASA-funded scientists and engineers have been evaluating landing sites using modern methods for 30 years, and have developed strategies and techniques that have resulted in six successful landed missions on Mars. In this talk, I will discuss the history of selecting landing sites on Mars and the current state-of-the art methods for characterizing the physical surface on Mars in terms of 1) slope and topography analyses and 2) deriving and interpreting surface properties. I will then discuss where we are as a community in terms of our ability to determine safe landing sites for future missions and potentially landing humans on Mars.
