Leif Erland Andersson Award for Service
Awarded annually to a PTYS graduate student in recognition for attention to broader impacts and involvement in activities outside of academic responsibilities that benefit the department, university, and the larger community. The award is named for Dr. Leif Andersson, a scientist who worked at LPL in the 1970s.
Carson Fellowship
The Carson Graduate Fellowship honors Lt. Col. Kenneth Rondo, a former member of the "Flying Tigers," a former member of the Joint Strategic Target Planning Staff Strategic Air Command, master navigator and enthusiast of space exploration. The Carson Fellowship is awarded to students pursuing degrees in the Department of Planetary Sciences, Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, selected on the basis of academic achievement and the promise of further scholarly endeavor.
Curson Travel Award
The Shirley D. Curson Education Plus Fund in Planetary Sciences and LPL (formerly the Shandel Education Plus Fund) was established for the purpose of supporting travel expenses outside the state of Arizona during summer break. The award is open to PTYS students who propose to fund study, museum visits, special exhibits, seminars, instruction, competitions, research and other endeavors that are beyond those provided by the normal campus environment and are not part of the student’s regular curriculum during the school year.
Annual Donors Travel Award
These awards are intended for career advancement, usually associated with travel, for LPL students and staff. They are supported by gifts, typically of $500 or $1000, from donors.
Kuiper Memorial Award
Presented to students of the planetary sciences who best exemplify, through the high quality of their researches and the excellence of their scholastic achievements, the goals and standards established and maintained by Gerard P. Kuiper, founder of the Lunar and Planetary Laboratory and the Department of Planetary Sciences at the University of Arizona.
Adam P. Showman Distinguished Visiting Lectureship
This endowment honors the legacy of Adam P. Showman (1968-2020) by supporting extended visits by exceptional planetary scientists with similarly broad interests to engage with and inspire our students, just as Adam did.
Wilkening-Sill Endowment in support of LPL Field Trip
The Wilkening-Sill endowment helps fund the PTYS graduate field trips, supporting graduate students in their study of planetary surfaces.
Blitzer Award for Excellence in the Teaching of Physics and Related Sciences
The Blitzer Award for Excellence in the Teaching of Physics and Related Sciences is shared by the departments of Astronomy, Atmospheric Sciences, Physics, and Planetary Sciences.
