LPL Colloquium: Dr. George Rieke

The World Center for Infrared Astronomy

When

April 28, 2026, 3:45 – 4:45 p.m.

Where

Dr. George Rieke
Regents Professor
Astronomy and Planetary Sciences
University of Arizona

After its founding, the Lunar and Planetary Laboratory quickly became THE world center for infrared astronomy and held that position for nearly two decades. The mode of operation and lab goals were very different then from now. Eventually this tension led to a somewhat violent schism; amazingly things quickly settled down amicably with a new structure for astronomy at the university. The infrared group re-assembled at Steward Observatory, where it has continued to flourish. Its strongest tie to its LPL roots may be observations of planetary debris disks. I will discuss recent JWST observations of these systems. Everyone loves violent action, so I will emphasize cases where we see some smash-boom. These events maintain the dusty rings around stars, which we can probe for its composition, search its structure for unseen planets, and in some cases wonder at its beauty.
