Prof. Fang was a faculty in the physics department for twenty years (1992 - 2012). For those of you who are not familiar with Prof. Fang, he is a renowned theoretical astrophysicist, as well as an activist for the democracy movement in China. He started his research in cosmology in the beginning of 1970s and wrote the first modern cosmological research paper in mainland China. He soon gained international recognition as China began to open up in the late 1970s. He published a large number of papers on astrophysics and cosmology as well as trained many younger colleagues and students. Prof. Fang was regarded as the father of cosmological research in China. After he was exiled from China, he moved to UA in 1992 and continued his research till the last day of his life.

After he passed away in 2012, we decided to establish an annual lecture series to honor Prof. Fang’s lifetime achievements. Feb 12 this year is Prof. Fang’s 90th birthday and a good time for us to start the lecture series. George Rieke (Regent Professor) from Astro has agreed to be our inaugural lecturer!
