Draa
acrylic on canvas
Francesca O'Malley
This painting shows a partial figure, viewed straight on, reposing against an overhead view of a giant landform on Mars—a draa. The two opposing perspectives create tension as the curves of the two main elements echo each other. A letter “M” glyph hovers over everything. Virtual space travel happens here. The landscape image (taken with HiRise) was appropriated from NASA.
A native of New York City, I received my BFA and MFA in painting, from Pratt Institute. Experience as an Art Director, love of typography, questions about the nature of reality, the multiverse, etc., inform my imagery. I explore space, dimension, light, symbol, and the human figure, often placing these things in contradiction to each other. My methods combine both electronic and traditional tools.
